A tired outbuilding door or weatherworn garden gate can make the whole corner of a garden feel neglected. Replacing it can be a huge finishing touch when you’re refreshing the space, whether you’ve been tackling the planting or giving an outbuilding some attention.
JB Kind’s boarded designs suit simple, practical garden projects. Their traditional appearance works well alongside brick, timber fencing and leafy borders, while a carefully chosen paint colour helps bring everything together.
The JB Kind FL&B Pine Gate is a ledged and braced design with a robust frame for added stability that’s perfect for use as a garden gate or shed door. Made from solid untreated softwood, they’re ready for the preparation and painting needed before installation.
The JB Kind L&B Pine Gate offers ledged and braced construction without the framing and is also suitable for gate or shed-door applications. Both designs are available in several sizes, so compare the dimensions with your opening before deciding which you’d prefer.
Start with where the door will be fitted. JB Kind’s softwood external door range is intended for outbuildings and other suitable unheated spaces such as garages, workshops and sheds.
For a replacement shed door, check the condition of the existing frame as well as its dimensions. For a garden gate, consider the supporting posts, opening direction and clearance above the ground. A joiner can help confirm the size and hardware needed.
Remember to allow for suitable outdoor hardware, decorating materials and fitting when setting your budget too. If you’re unsure which design will suit your needs best, speak to our team. We’re here to help you get your project moving in the right direction.
A soft green can sit beautifully against planting, while a warm cream can significantly brighten a tucked-away garden entrance. Be sure to choose your colour within a suitable exterior paint system and follow the finishing instructions supplied with your door.
Preparation matters here. The better it is, the better the final finish will be and the longer it will last. JB Kind specifies exterior waterproof paint as being the best option for their softwood boarded products, and softwood needs sealing prior to painting. Face knots, fixing holes and staple holes should be filled prior to decoration where needed too as this will help prevent resin bleed over time. As these JB Kind garden doors are supplied unfinished, it's important when choosing your garden gates that you take home finishing into consideration, it's not always a quick job but that flexibility to get it exactly how you like it is priceless.
At Doors & More, we help you work through the details that make a difference, we’ll help you figure out the right door or gate for your space and needs, the right size and the finishing work to plan for. Questions about JB Kind External Doors![]()
While you can have pine front and back doors, the softwood boarded designs in this collection are intended for outbuildings and other outdoor applications such as on the side of garages or for added security as a side entrance gate on your house. JB Kind doesn’t recommend them for use on a house, simple because they won't offer the same thermal protection or security levels you'd expect from a proper entrance door. For an entrance to a home, choose a door specifically suited to that use.
FL&B means framed, ledged and braced, L&B means ledged and braced. Ledges are horizontal supports across the boards, while braces run diagonally, with the braces fixed to support the boarded construction. A framed design also has an outer framework. On these gate styles, the braces are fixed in an arrowhead formation enabling the door to be hung on either side.
Check the individual product’s construction and dimensions when comparing the two to find out which would best suit your needs and budget.
Yes, the doors and gates are supplied unfinished so need sealing prior to a suitable exterior waterproof paint finish to help protect it from weather exposure. Prepare knots and fixing holes as necessary and protect all faces and edges. Be sure to follow the supplied care instructions rather than treating them like fence panels.
It's best to check the permitted adjustments for the exact model before cutting as not all will allow the same. The construction affects what can be removed, it's always best to ask for advice if the standard dimensions on offer don’t suit your opening. Also, remember that any exposed timber created during fitting work must also be properly resealed to prevent premature aging of the wood.
The listed FL&B and L&B pine designs have braces arranged in an arrowhead formation, which allows either handing. Your installer should still check the hinge positions, supports and opening clearance for your chosen location though.
Like with other pine gates and doors, the simplest door care advice we can offer is "little and often". Check the paint finish regularly and address worn or damaged areas before moisture reaches bare timber. Keep the surface clean and follow the coating manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. The level of exposure to sun and rain will affect how often attention is needed so do bear this in mind when choosing both the gate and the finish.
